51-year-old Dubai resident installed the first full 3D printed prosthetic leg

This week, a Dubai resident installed the first full 3D printed prosthetic leg in the UAE. The 51-year-old Belinda Gatland is from the UK and is now based in Dubai. In a horse racing accident, her left leg was seriously injured and eventually she was amputated below her left leg.

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and Arab Health jointly promoted this 3D printing project, and Gatland also received a grant from the UK for injured jockeys. Although Gatland has installed a new 3D printed prosthetic leg for a few days now, she is very satisfied with the result.

"This new technology is incredible. I was deeply impressed by the prosthetic legs on the new installation. It is very comfortable and real. I took it when I left the machine. Now I can almost use the left. Legs do anything," Gatland said excitedly.

The parts of the prosthetic leg were printed at the Bulgarian medical company ProfFit and the German medical company Mecuris 3D, and the installation was carried out in Dubai.

The cost of a standard prosthetic leg ranges from 11,000 to 20,000 dirhams, while the cost of a custom prosthetic leg for a sporty person like Gatland can cost as much as AED 80,000. With 3D printing, developers are hoping to reduce costs to between Dh 2,500 and 4,000, which is closer to DHA's predicted 2025 prosthetic price.
