A new study shows that people who meet the recommended weekly sports guidelines still have a higher risk of developing chronic diseases if they spend too much time on non-sports. Men and women with higher levels of education are also more likely to be sedentary. “It seems that there is an independent relationship between excessive sitting and health, even in those who meet the 150-minute weekly physical activity guidelines, excessive sitting during the rest of the day can have adverse health effects,” Katzmarzyk said.

Research into the relationship between exercise and sedentary behavior has consistently shown that although moderate to strenuous exercise is advocated, even a slight exercise that replaces sedentary time can have a positive impact on long-term health.
