Nature's creatures are all sorts of weird things that always leave people dizzying. In general, male animals tend to promiscuous with other species more than females. However, a new study shows that when male jasmines follow their females of the same species, they produce more sperm than they do when they pursue strangers. These findings suggest that physiological characteristics of males can produce a barrier for interspecific hybridization. The researchers published these findings on the web version of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week. When a group of animals become reproductively independent, new species are produced. This reproductive isolation means that they will no longer mate with closely related animals; or if mated, they cannot produce fertile offspring. Researchers believe that the most important barrier that separates species from each other is male choice: most males only stick to their own females. But there are some who are less selective about their spouses: They will try to mate with similar females, especially when they are living closer together. Researchers at the University of Texas are skeptical that other factors may contribute to reproductive isolation. To confirm this speculation, the researchers specially made a pitcher with a Plexiglas screen and placed a male jasmine aside. Then, they put a female fish of the same species or close relatives of Amazon molly on the other side. A week later, the researchers collected sperm from male fish and found that when males hit a female of the same species, they produced significantly more sperm cells than when they faced a different species of Amazonian sailfish. These findings suggest that although males seem to be attracted to the opposite sex on the surface, they gradually reduce the production of sperm when they follow the opposite sex - this mechanism may promote reproductive isolation. These results also indicate that males can respond to heterosexual sexual cues by changing their reproductive characteristics.
