The relevant results were published online on April 15th in Nature-Biomedical Engineering.

Myocardial patch is a potentially effective way to treat severe myocardial infarction and subsequent heart failure. However, the mechanical mechanisms of myocardial patches in limiting ventricular remodeling and improving cardiac function are unclear. Materials of different nature have been used to prepare various types of myocardial patches, but whether there are optimal material properties and mechanical properties unknown.

The research team first constructed a finite element model of the ventricle to accurately and quantitatively describe the mechanical environment of myocardial infarction and non-infarct areas. Next, the researchers used computational simulations to investigate what mechanical constraints should be applied to the infarcted area to reconstruct their mechanical function and eliminate the mechanical differences between the two regions. Based on the best mechanical reconstruction strategy, they developed a mechanically adaptive self-adhesive myocardial patch GPAP with "gel point" rheological properties.

"It adheres to the surface of the heart and can significantly reduce the relaxation constant of the myocardium in the infarcted area, reaching a level almost identical to that of the non-infarcted area." Yang Lei told the Journal of Chinese Academy of Sciences that after using GPAP, the condition of the animal will be delayed. Reversal, the main indicators of cardiac function will also be restored, the effect surpassed almost all reported cell-free myocardial patches or even some stem cell patches.

This study embodies the advantages of cross-disciplinary cooperation in different disciplines such as medicine, physics and materials science, reveals the mechanism of mechanical action in the treatment of myocardial infarction, and develops a myocardial patch with independent intellectual property rights, which is expected to effectively treat myocardial infarction. The research results open up new ideas for the treatment of major diseases including ischemic cardiomyopathy.
