Scientists at the University of Denver primarily print 3D copies of heart valves based on patient MRI and CT scan data. The project's graduate assistant, Ben Stewart, created a sample in just 22 minutes. "It exactly matches the shape of the patient's heart valve." But Stewart said that in order to function in the human body, it needs to be placed in a container called a bioreactor, in which scientists inject human cells. Ideally, these cells will attach to a replica of the heart valve, which then grow into a tissue or structure of similar shape. The printed replica of the heart valve is broken down in the process, and Stewart likens it to a scaffolding that builds a heart valve.

“These are native fibers and native cells that replace the entire “scaffolding”, leaving only natural, real blood vessels,” he said.
