The issue of soil heavy metal pollution by Xinhua News Agency has caused widespread public concern recently. The reporter learned from the Ministry of Land and Resources and the China Geological Survey that China is currently conducting a comprehensive consultation on the status of soil heavy metal pollution and drawing a “human pollution map” of soil heavy metals.

It is understood that China is establishing a geochemical reference network covering 81 chemical indicators (including 78 elements): grid cells with a scale of 1:200,000 maps, each grid has a sampling point, and each point A deep soil sample and a top soil sample were collected. The deep sample comes from less than 1 meter and basically represents the natural geochemical background that has not been contaminated by humans. The surface sample comes from shallow surface 25 centimeters, which is a superposition of natural geological background and human activity pollution. Subtracting the deep layer content from the surface layer yields the “human contamination map” of heavy metal elements.

As an important result of the National Land Resources Survey and the investigation of soil pollution throughout the country, the National Multi-Target Regional Geochemical Survey Project has also found serious soil contamination in some areas. For example, cadmium, mercury, lead, arsenic and other abnormalities are common in some regions of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Abnormal mercury and lead are common in and around the city, and radioactive anomalies are apparent in some cities. The lake is rich in harmful elements, and the acidification of the soil is serious.

Studies have confirmed that there is a close relationship between heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury and human pollution. Heavy metal elements are apparently enriched in the soil surface and closely related to densely populated areas, industrial and mining areas. Compared with the sampling from 1994-1995, the distribution area of ​​heavy metal pollution in soil was significantly expanded and spread to the densely populated areas in the east.

According to reports, since 1994, the Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences has monitored 51 chemical elements in the soil throughout the country. In 1999, it began mapping 54 chemical elements in the farmland of eastern China. We started to establish a geochemical reference network covering the whole country, and detected 81 chemical indicators of soil containing 78 elements. The data show that indicators of heavy metals and other pollutants rose rapidly in large watersheds and local industrial mining and agricultural areas.

Geologists have pointed out that once the soil is contaminated, the period of complete restoration through self-purification is as long as a thousand years. For human health, we must continue to increase the supervision and punishment of pollution behavior. For the contaminated land, it is necessary to clarify the source of pollution and cut it off. Soil pollutants not only have heavy metals but also a large number of organic pollutants.
