Imagine that you can only spend a lifetime in a world of black and white, and then see a bottle of colored roses for the first time. This is the feeling that scientists who use the electron microscope to take the first shot of a multi-color photo of a cell. Electron microscopy magnifies an object to 10 million times, allowing researchers to see how the inner workings of cells or fly eyes work. But so far, they only see white and black images. Recent advances have utilized three different rare earth metals called lanthanides. They are layered over the cells on the microscope slide. The microscope detects when each metal loses electrons and records each unique loss with artificial pigments. To date, researchers have been able to produce only three colors - red, green and yellow. They reported this result in the online edition of the journal Cell Chemistry Biology. However, this ability to use different colors creates a sharp contrast that grayscale images cannot achieve. For example, the team can see a series of proteins squeezed through the cell membrane in more detail, something scientists have never done before. As more fine-tuning and metal ions are added, the researchers hope to add another 3 to 4 other colors and improve the resolution of the image.
