WEMU = shirt plus hat = save epilepsy

Release date: 2014-12-15

When it comes to wearables, most people can think of smart bracelets, such as Jawbone Up or Misfit Flash. It is true that they are very hot now, and they are also very popular among consumers. But when the smart bracelet has become the "arcade standard", what should we expect for medical and health wearable devices? For example, a "smart shirt" that can save an individual's life.

The startup BioSerenity invented a smart shirt called WEMU, which is called the "Wearable Epilepsy Monitoring Unit". Built-in biosensors, using cloud big data to diagnose patients with epilepsy. BioSerenity also won this year's iiAwards award for this product (issued by the City of Paris to encourage outstanding startups of the year).

Save the clothing of patients with epilepsy

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder known as chronic recurrent transient brain dysfunction syndrome. The current medical level still makes humans still unable to fully understand and overcome epilepsy, but according to the World Health Organization report, abnormal discharge of brain neurons is the main cause of epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation says that the incidence of the disease worldwide is as high as 1/26, and 70% of them will receive timely treatment.

Pierre-Yves Frouin, CEO of BioSerenity, has many years of experience in medical pharmacy and health diagnostics. Feuin said, "Epilepsy affects the normal life of 50 million people around the world. In order to thoroughly diagnose this thorny disease, doctors need to get a full range of physical data from patients. In the current situation, the cost is very high and applicable. Limited sexuality and the need for patients to participate throughout the hospital."

The living environment in real life is complex and changeable. Epilepsy is more of a random phenomenon without warning. The time of onset is not fixed, and the length of the disease is difficult to control. It is difficult for medical personnel to ensure that the patient's condition can be collected in time. In layman's terms, patients can't stay in the hospital for most of their lives, even 24 hours. Patients with no onset are undoubtedly the same as normal people. In more common cases, they may have a sudden onset of seizures on their way to work, shopping, and going out, and they cannot get rapid control.

According to Frouin, “WEMU smart clothing is more like a home medical device that helps patients monitor their condition at home. And at the time of onset, the device can give patients timely and effective treatment. To some extent, it It can even save the lives of patients.

Device plus application plus data

WEMU saves patients with epilepsy from going to the hospital. WEMU's complete set of equipment consists of three main components. The first is a smart shirt and a matching add-on device, smart hat. Biosensors are embedded in the device to monitor and record the patient's physiological data characteristics. These data will be instantly connected to the companion mobile app via Bluetooth connection.

The second part is the App, which is also a highlight feature of the entire device, recording the patient's long-term physiological data, predicting the patient's onset time through a special algorithm, and being able to push warning messages to the patient and the bound supervisor's mobile app. In addition, relevant data can be transmitted to the patient's attending physician.

If the first two parts are to ensure the health of the individual, then the third part of the cloud big data function, I believe that can bring the gospel to the problem of all human beings to overcome epilepsy. The patient's condition data recorded by the WEMU app will remove the patient's private information and upload it anonymously to the cloud database. These resources of great value can make a great contribution to future research.

Prior to founding BioSerenity, Frouin himself worked for many years in Johnson & Johnson's medical diagnostics department. He said that epilepsy is a complex chronic disease that can last for years, even decades, and can have a major impact on the mental health of patients. The WEMU project hopes to enable more patients to participate in the diagnosis and treatment process, and to analyze the pre-, post-, and post-dose data of a large number of patients through the cloud database, which can help people to have a deeper understanding of epilepsy.
