App can diagnose skin cancer with an accuracy rate of 90%

Release date: 2014-11-19

A new app recently claimed to be the most scientific and accurate skin cancer monitoring and recognition app.

SkinVision uses the latest image algorithms to diagnose skin cancer with an accuracy rate of up to 90%. The algorithm uses 4000 skin photos of 500 people for evaluation.

Researchers have emphasized that the app does not provide a complete diagnosis and is not a substitute for medical equipment, but it can identify high-risk skin lesions and determine if they are associated with disease.

If an "abnormal or dangerous" skin growth feature is detected, the app will give a warning message. Users can also track their evolution over time.

The app's skin pattern recognition relies on fractal analysis to calculate the pattern and dimensions of skin lesions and surrounding tissues. By calculating the fractal dimensions of the skin and lesions, the analysis algorithm can detect any abnormal growth patterns.

Dermatologists evaluated the basis of the algorithm for building more than 4,000 images of 500 patients. The algorithm also compares the diagnosis and dermascopic findings of dermatologists with the same lesions in clinical studies.

Compared with the biopsy results, the accuracy of the algorithm is 74%. Compared with skin microscopy results, the algorithm accuracy is as high as 90%.

However, app developers emphasize that apps can't replace professional devices. Users who want to be diagnosed also need to go to an expert for a professional examination.

The app is priced at £2.99 per month in the UK, $4.99 in the US, and £17.49 ($28) in the annual fee.
